Frequently Asked Questions for Rising 6th Graders

From GHMS- Reading Specialist to Feeder ES Teachers

Reading Strategies for the upcoming 2025-2026 school year, here is a list of criteria to consider for rising 6th graders.  The information requested is based on VLA. 

This data will help determine student placement in Reading Strategies to support the core subject: Language Arts.

  • Did students receive VALLSS (Virginia Language Literacy Screener System)? 
  • What HQIM (High Quality Instructional Materials) is used? (Hampton uses HMH) 
  • What Tier 2 instruction is used? (Hampton uses Lexia for Language Arts) 
  • What are students' SOL Scores? 

  1. What are the key dates for the transition process?

    • Course Request Deadline- TBD
    • Open House- TBD
    • Orientation- TBD
    • Teacher Recommendtion Form Deadline- TBD
    • SPED Teacher Recommendation Form Deadline- TBD

  2.  Who is the main point of contact for transition-related questions?

    • Jessica Raymond, Registrar/Counseling Secretary

  3. How will families be informed about the transition process and important dates?

    • A School Status message will be shared with students who are projected to attend Hampton.

  4. Is this information available on the school's website?

    • Yes, the website will be updated to include this information. Please click on "Daily Announcements" under the  "About Us" dropdown menu.

  5. Will there be an in-school visit for rising 6th graders? If so, what will it include? 

    • The in-school visit will take place during the summer Open House.

  6. Will Hampton offer a summer orientation? If so, what are the dates and structure?

    • Summer orientation- TBD
    • The structure is- TBD

  7. Is there a parent orientation or information session? How can families access this?

    • There is no Parent Orientation, however, the information will be added to the school's website. Additionally, a school status message will be emailed.

  8. What core classes are required for 6th graders? 

    • Language Arts or Language Arts Extended
    • Math or Math Extended
    • Science
    • Social Studies
    • Health & PE

  9. What elective options are available for 6th grade students?

    • IBMYP Art 6
    • IBMYP Intro to Technology and Engineering
    • IBMYP FACS- Exploratory 1
    • Did not offer this year STEM Solutions- New course name: Computer Solutions

  10. How many classes do students have on their schedules? 

    • There are 7 class periods, some of the classes rotate daily. there should be a total of 11 to 12 to include a full year schedule of all classes

  11. What does the lunch schedule look like for 6th graders?

    • Currently, there are two lunch schedules.
    • The lunch period is 25 minutes for each lunch group.
    • Lunch is available or packed lunch is allowed. A microwave is available.
    • Deliveries such as Ubereats is not permitted.

  12. Do encore classes rotate quarterly or stay the same all year? 

    • Currently, Hampton's encore classes rotate quarterly 

  13. Does Hampton assign lockers to 6th grade students? If so, how and when are they assigned?

    • Students are assigned lockers which are distributed after the first month of school. Homeroom teachers will distribute student lockers.

  14. What sports teams are available for 6th grade students?

    • No Place for Hate

  2. What is the best way for families to communicate with counselors or administrators during the transition period?

    • Preferably by email. However, calls can be made at the school from the hours of 8:30 am to 4 pm.

  3. How will families be notified if they have not submitted course requests?

    • Parentvue will have the student online course request form (Documents Tab)
    • Elemntary school counselors will be notified using a spreadsheet

  4. How will families be informed about schedules and teacher assignments?

    • Student schedules will become live in the summer. PWCS will share the date.
    • A school status message will be sent to all grade 6 parents to login to Parentvue to access the student schedule. This schedule will be used during Open House.
