The Journalism Club

by Mrs. Crawford - 7th and 8th Grade Creative Writing Teacher

This school year I decided to have a Journalism Club after getting my feet wet as a new Creative Writing teacher for 7th and 8th Grade here at Hampton last year. I wanted to expose students to the world of journalism and what it takes to engage in authentic, purposeful writing. Drawing on my experience as a writer and Editor-in-Chief for my college newspaper, The Billboard, I look forward to guiding students through the process of coming up with writing ideas and putting them in a format that others can read and be moved by.

We had our first Journalism Club meeting in the fall of 2021. Since then, we have met once a week to brainstorm ideas and to gather information. We came up with the title Husky Highlights for our newsletter and settled on using Microsoft products and our school website to publish it. The first issue was published on the school webpage in December 2021. The March 2022 issue was published on the school website and in a print version which was placed in key locations in the school. Some exciting features include a monthly word find contest and comic strip: "Husky Halls!". We are currently working on an idea for a new section that allows readers to use their voice and look forward to the newsletter evolving and growing as our club grows.

I am both honored and excited to be able to guide student club members in all aspects of the newsletter publication. As such, students are involved in the publication of the newsletter from beginning to end. Students research and write content, take photos, and design and layout the print and web versions. They work on content during Journalism Club meetings on Wednesdays after school and brainstorm ideas for content, drawing from activities and events within the school and the community at large.

All in all, the Journalism Club gives students authentic, real-life experience learning and applying academic skills in writing, language arts, math, and the social sciences. Use of those skills to publish the Husky Highlights benefits the students and the school community. If you or someone you know is interested in joining the GHMS Journalism Club, sign up here or come to our meeting Wednesdays right after school.
